On its first program, ruangarsip, will perform two works from two most ingenious directors. They bring most imaginative movies we’ve rarely seen. The movies tell two stories about two young men struggling with their feeling. Gladly, it’s not just a freaking film from delusional mind. It is served on sweet evocative way. One is a childlike man, who lives two life’s fantasy and reality. While having crush on his neighbor. Another one is a man who desperate after his girlfriend leaving him for another man. He tells a story to a Romanian child, to secretly help him suicide.
The first is Michel Gondry, mostly known by his work on some most creative music videos on MTV these past two decades. His production is kind of childish and playful creation. You can find it on his unique second feature La science des rêves (2006) that we will screen.
La science des rêves (2006)
Gael García Bernal, Charlotte Gainsbourg
English and French with English subtitle.
Synopsis:
After his father’s death, Stephane Miroux moves to France, where his mother has promised him an apartment and a job that will channel his artistic talent. The latter turns out to be stultifying cut-and-paste work on cheap calendars, but the former finds him a possible soulmate in next-door neighbor, Stephanie. Stymied by the challenges of the real world, Miroux frequently drops into fantasies where simple stop-motion and cobbled-together cardboard sets lend a sweet, ramshackle innocence to his escapism. Buoyed by Stephanie’s participation in his flights of fancy, Bernal becomes attached to her, and sometimes it’s them against the mundane world. But she doesn’t always appreciate his childishness and unpredictability, and he can’t decide whether he wants to venture far enough into the real world to meet her halfway.
The second is Tarsem Singh; his day job is commercial director for big brand. With his second feature The Fall (2006), he delivers striking fable to vivid life onscreen. Filmed over 20 countries all over the world include Bali. This might be an over-the-top ambitious movie, but the cinematography, the unique architecture and the breathtaking traditional art involving are just too good to be miss. And yes, as he said, he does not use CGI to produce the film.
